Credit where it’s due: when Apple rolls out a new platform update, it makes sure a majority of iPhones receive it instantaneously. iOS 11 was introduced just three weeks ago, but it has already overtaken iOS 10 as the most-used platform on iPhones, netting a market share of 47%. Considering there are well over a billion iPhones in the world, that is an absolutely remarkable statistic.
The number comes from Mixpanel, a business analytics company that looks at user interactions across web and mobile platforms. While the number certainly sounds impressive, iOS 11 adoption is in fact slower than last year, where iOS 10 overtook iOS 9 in just two weeks.
As for other iOS versions, iOS 10 is currently at 46%, and iOS 9 and older are hovering at just 6.7%. Meanwhile on Android, the latest distribution numbers from Google show Oreo installed on just 0.2% of active Android devices, with Nougat (which is over a year old at this point) at a meager 17.8%.
Obviously, Apple’s ability to vertically integrate (and tightly control) both the hardware and software gives it a distinct edge over Google. New Android updates aren’t available immediately (or ever for most devices) as most companies just don’t have the resources to update their skins with the new platform versions. As a result, a majority of users miss out on the latest features.
Google is looking to fix that with Project Treble, but we’ll only get to see if that makes a tangible difference in a year’s time. With Project Treble, Google is making it easier for manufacturers to update the source kernel (the bits that change with each platform) without having to make any changes to their custom interfaces. That means in the future, you should be able to receive a new update on your Samsung, LG, or HTC device within a few weeks of Google announcing it, and not the usual three- to six-month wait that we have now. That’s the theory anyway.
In the meantime, iOS users will seamlessly make the switch to whatever new version Apple announces in a matter of days.
