The Oppo F5 was launched earlier this month in India. While we’re sure many users knew Deepika Padukone was endorsing some smartphone brand (thanks to the million ads that were splashed all over the internet and offline), we decided to look past her perfect face and take a closer look at the phone itself.
Oppo F5 goes all out on design
The F5 is Oppo’s first attempt at going bezel-less. And it has done a great job of it because the 18:9 display gives you a screen-to-body ratio of 78.11%. The six-inch display is an LTPS LCD capacitive screen that gives you a pixel density of 402 ppi. The screen comes with Corning Gorilla Glass 5 and a resolution of 1080×2160, which essentially means you’ll find the quality of your videos more than satisfactory.
The F5 has a beautiful unibody and a chrome ring that runs along the edges. The design of the phone is stunning – it has beautiful edges and curves and feels great to hold. The phone is available in three colors: red, black and gold. Personally, we loved the look of the red and black versions but could only find the gold variant available for purchase in India, on various websites.
Oppo F5 lets you be a selfie expert
As tradition holds, Oppo continued to focus on users looking for that perfect selfie. The phone offers a 20MP front camera which lets you take pictures so detailed that bits of your soul will be visible. The f2.0 aperture and 1/2.8” sensor in the front camera ensure clarity in any picture you shoot.
They’ve thrown in ‘Artificial Intelligence’ software that offers F5 owners a chance to try the facial feature optimization feature, which basically helps you click a beautiful photograph of yourself no matter how you look in real life. Jokes apart, it aims for consistent skin tone, symmetry, and a blemish-free look. The 16MP f1.8-aperture rear camera does a pretty good job as well, capturing vibrant colors even in artificial or low-light conditions.
Oppo’s F5 offers impressive features for the price
The processor on the Oppo smartphone comes from Mediatek; the F5 has an MT6763T octa-core chip which has half the cores running at 2.3Ghz and the other half at 1.65Ghz. The integrated Mali-G71 MP2 processor from ARM allows users to play games and use VR without putting too much of a strain on the Li-ion 3,200mAh battery. The phone comes with 4GB RAM and 32GB onboard storage, with Oppo promising to release a 6GB 64GB version soon. The phone also offers a standalone microSD card slot, so you can upgrade memory up to 256GB. The phone ships with a micro-USB charger and not a type-C, and strangely does not offer fast charging.
The phone runs on ColorOS 3.2 which is Oppo’s custom version of Android’s Nougat OS, version 7.1. ColorOS is inspired by Apple’s iOS and offers customized apps for the clock, calendar, gallery, etc and you can observe similar design elements as the iPhone’s UI, especially in the Settings menu. The new version offers way more features than the earlier ColorOS – faster app launches, faster app installation times, split-screen multitasking, etc. The F5 also lets users set up facial unlock, but we’re guessing it isn’t as fancy as the ‘FaceID’ feature of the iPhone X. Thankfully the phone still offers fingerprint unlock, so your evil twin won’t be able to steal your data anytime soon.
Overall, Oppo’s latest phone is an all-rounder that offers great value for money. With respect to its features, build quality and price, it has no equal. Considering that we found it to be the best mobile under ₹20000, we think the Oppo F5 should be your next smartphone.
